How do the residents of Šiauliai sort their waste?

On past days, waste management are increasingly encountering improperly managed waste by residents. In the city of Šiauliai, mixed municipal waste containers are being filled with paper, plastic, and glass packaging. The lids of these containers are left open, waste are often left next to them.

Šiauliai Regional Waste Management Center reminds residents that proper waste sorting is the responsibility of every resident.

Sorting is the responsibility of waste producers

Beside the filled mixed municipal waste containers, there are often empty containers for paper and cardboard, plastic and metal, and glass packaging waste. If residents properly sort their waste at home, the waste flow would be distributed more evenly, and a large portion of it would be placed in packaging containers rather than municipal waste containers. Paper packaging thrown into these containers should be folded and compressed as much as possible to occupy less space, while plastic packaging should be dry and empty to avoid contaminating other waste in the container.

The most important thing is not to throw any waste into a filled mixed municipal waste container or, even worse, start loading waste next to the container. Depending on the apartment building to which the container is assigned, the mixed municipal waste container is emptied 3-4 times per week. Specialists analyze the waste flow and handle each situation individually: they call the waste carrier earlier if the containers are overflowing, set up additional containers, and so on.

Large dimensions waste is collected only on specified days

Bulky waste generated in households is collected four times a year. The last collection of large dimensions waste in Šiauliai city took place from May 29 to June 7, the next one will be from August 7 to August 17. Specialists emphasize that the date indicated in the schedule is the day of bulky waste removal, and if residents do not adhere to the schedule, they start forming illegal dumps. To live in a clean and tidy city, the contribution of each resident is important. All you need to do is check when large dimensions waste is collected at your address (schedule for individual houses here, for apartment buildings here) and take it out on the specified day. Failure to comply with these basic rules can result in fines of up to €140, and repeated offenses can result in fines of up to €600.
